Prepare Your Pond for Winter

Prepare Your Pond for Winter
Why Fall Is the Best Time to Get Ahead of Maintenance

Fall and early winter are the ideal seasons to prepare HOA, municipal, or golf course ponds for winter. A few simple steps now can prevent costly issues later—and set your water features up for a healthy spring.

Here’s what we recommend:

1. Dredge Your Ponds

Removing organic muck in the fall helps prevent summer algae blooms, restores capacity, and improves water quality.
Our crews dredge everything from small neighborhood ponds to large lakes and reservoirs—and the organic material we remove can even be reused as nutrient-rich soil.

2. Remove Fallen Leaves

Leaves break down into nutrient-heavy muck that feeds algae and invasive plants. If daily leaf removal is hard to keep up with, consider adding a 3–4 ft vegetation buffer around shorelines to capture debris before it reaches the water.

3. Inspect Mechanical Equipment

Winter can damage pumps, aerators, fountains, and other mechanical systems. Before temperatures drop:

  • Check pumps and aerators for wear
  • Replace fountain seals every 2–3 years
  • Bring floating features indoors before freezing
  • Stock spare parts to avoid winter shipping delays

4. Repair Shorelines

Look for eroded banks or debris buildup. Fall temperatures make it the best time to re-seed, replant, and stabilize shoreline soils before winter weather sets in.

5. Stock Fish

Fall is perfect for introducing cold-water species like trout. Warm-water species eat less in winter, so feed sparingly to avoid adding more organic matter to the pond bottom.
