How to Remove Underwater Stumps and Brush: 5 Methods Explained

How to Remove Underwater Stumps and Brush: 5 Methods Explained

Underwater stumps, shrubs, and brush can create serious hazards for boats, marine vessels, and swimmers. They’re unsightly, obstruct navigation, and pose risks to anyone or anything that encounters them. In fact, according to the Brazos River Authority, submerged debris can damage boat propellers, make waterways impassable, and even contribute to dangerous flooding by restricting water flow. So, how do you remove a tree stump or brush a few feet underwater? We’ll walk you through four DIY methods—plus one professional solution that can save you time, effort, and money.

1. Stump Grinder (Limited Use)

A stump grinder is a powerful piece of equipment that grinds stumps into wood chips and is often the first tool that comes to mind for removing stumps. However, using one underwater is not as straightforward as it sounds. If the stump is near the shoreline and within reach, you might have some success grinding it down. But for stumps fully submerged or in deeper water, this method becomes impractical. Keep in mind that even on dry land, grinding a stump takes time—so expect a slow process.

2. Explosives (Not Recommended)

While explosives like dynamite or Tannerite can technically remove underwater stumps, this is not a viable option for most people. Obtaining explosives requires permits and extensive training, and using them near a dock or populated area is dangerous and highly regulated. If not done correctly, you could cause significant damage—or worse. For these reasons, this method is best left to professionals with the proper credentials.

3. Chemical Stump Removal (Limited Use)

If power tools and explosives aren’t for you, chemical stump removal might be an option—though only if the stump is partially above water. This method involves drilling holes into the stump and applying a chemical solution designed to accelerate decomposition. Over time (typically several weeks to months), the stump softens and breaks down, making removal easier. However, this approach is ineffective for fully submerged stumps and can introduce harmful chemicals into the water.

4. Winch and Chain Removal

If you can secure a strong chain around the stump, a winch may be able to pull it free from the lake or riverbed. This method requires a powerful winch, a sturdy anchor point, and clearance around the stump to prevent entanglements. While effective in some cases, deep-rooted stumps or those in silty, muddy bottoms may be too stubborn for this technique.

5. Professional Underwater Stump Removal – The Best Solution!

Removing submerged stumps and brush is no easy task—it can be dangerous for the untrained. At AUS Dredge and Dive, we take pride in delivering professional, efficient, and safe removal of submerged tree stumps. With years of experience in underwater debris removal, we have the specialized equipment and expertise to efficiently and safely clear submerged hazards.

Every successful project begins with careful planning. Our team ensures that every aspect of the job is prepared, from transportation logistics to setting up the dive site.

Before any work begins, we conduct a comprehensive Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). This ensures that our crew understands the potential risks, safety protocols, and proper procedures for the task at hand. Safety is our top priority, and we adhere strictly to OSHA-29 CFR part 1910 regulations for commercial diving operations.

Our divers operate from a stable and efficient dive platform such as a pontoon work barge. This platform provides the necessary space and support for our crew to safely conduct operations while ensuring all equipment is securely managed throughout the process.

Once in the water, our experienced divers carefully cut tree stumps at the mud line using specialized underwater cutting tools. This process eliminates potential navigation hazards while maintaining the integrity of the lake or riverbed.
